Although 90 per cent of rape victims said they knew the identity of their attacker, just 15 per cent went to the police, telling researchers it was “too embarrassing”, “too trivial” or a “private/family matter”.

The first was in relation to the high number of sex offenders in current caseloads. As one volunteer stated I wonder if there should be some warning early on that a lot of prisoners asking for volunteers are sex offenders – that can be quite a surprise
